The Cherry Orchard
By Anton Chekhov Adapted by Andrew Upton
Summary
Madame Ranevskaya and her family of dreamers, idealists and romantics must eventually confront reality; they are deeply in debt and the only thing they have left to sell is their past.
The world is changing and changing. The richest man in the district was born the poorest serf. The train is shattering the once sweeping estates into affordable blocks.
The 20th century is breathing its hot breath down their soft aristocratic necks.
For this, Chekhov’s last great theatrical masterstroke, Sydney Theatre Company welcomes Howard Davies as director. Considered a master at illuminating the classics, he has garnered applause and awards over 30 years and is currently Associate Director of Britain’s National Theatre.
With Lucy Bell, Peter Carroll, John Gaden, Pip Miller, Robyn Nevin, Gwyneth Price, Philip Quast, Pamela Rabe, Andy Rodoreda, Justin Smith, Dan Spielman, Cameron Stewart and Anna Torv.
