Summer Rain
By Nick Enright & Terence Clarke
Summary
It's Christmas Eve 1945 and the Slocum Family Tent Show players are down on their luck, broke, and searching for an audience. Ending up in drought-stricken Turnaround Creek, they are welcomed by all in the small farming community, except for Barry the publican, who remembers with bitterness the last time the Slocums were in town.
Increasing hostility between the showies and the townfolk is broken by the arrival of the longed-for miracle of rain. Trapped there for nine days by floods, the Slocums put on a show for the town, and the two groups are forced to confront long buried secrets and old hurts. New relationships form and old ones are mended in a 'nine day wonder' of forgiveness and renewal.
This joyous Australian musical, a tale of rejuvenation and optimism, is a celebration of the work of the late Nick Enright, writer of the Australian musical hit The Boy from Oz and one of Australia's great story-tellers and lyricists.
“Enright…one of our theatre’s valued enchanters.”
